Just read this, Rhett, and really appreciate it. When leading worship I've been accustomed to begin with a time of confession before the call to worship/praise and adoration. Makes me see this differently, now. I can see how that focus on our sin may lead to a more despondant praise. It may be more appropriate to lead the congregation in a time of confession during a pastoral prayer. Thanks for the insight.

There is a book called, "From Embers To A Flame" by Harry Reeder III on this subject. Our pastor, Kevin Carroll, did a review of it on his blog - dated December 15, 2009. From my understanding, it is a much more Biblical approach to church growth than most. It's premise is, "a healthy church will grow, so aim to be a healthy church".

Thank you for this blog. I used to think it was hard to pray for a whole 5 minutes at a time. God has given me more time to spend with Him and WOW is it great. I love praying Psalm 51:10-12 each day. It describes my deplorable and dependent human condition, and reminds me again of His generous Spirit. I haven't prayed for an hour yet but I can see it happening. I would love it if my last days were spent in such fine prayer that I would walk from one side of the veil to the other in conversation with God.

Hello Rhett!

I ran across your website and blog and have been greatly encouraged by your writing. I remember the "Great Pain Version" that you refer to in this post (10/08/09). Pastor Price kept a copy on his desk as a conversation piece. I also have too often let circumstances control my responses rather than allowing God to receive glory and bring maturity in my life. This is a good reminder that nothing that happens in our lives is out of God's control.

Thank you for your ministry. May God richly bless you and your family.

You are so right! It's so easy to "blame" all our problems on circumstances brought to us, and in the process miss great blessings from God. When we trust God when He says He only brings good to us (Romans 8:28), we look for that good knowing God is NEVER a liar. God IS bringing good into our lives. Some of our greatest blessings come through our greatest trials. Praise God He cares enough to work in us through them!

Thank you for your kind words about my Grandfather. He was such a wonderful man, and the only thing that makes it easy for us all to loose him is to know that we all know where he went.

Rhett,

Gotta love that ESV Study Bible. :D

This is a mind-blowing line of thought! Very sobering to realize the brevity of life and reflect on it when others die.

Keep 'em comin'! (As they would say in Pickens, SC.)
